Retrospectiva do Chipre

beijos

Brazil dominates CEV Cyprus Challenger in Geroskipou

CEV Challenger & Satellite Paphos, Cyprus, July 19, 2009.

Brazil’s Barbara Seixas/Claudinere Bento ‘Neide’ thrashed Estonia’s Mari-Liis Graumann/Polina Bratuhhina 2-0 (21-11, 21-13) in the final of the CEV Cyprus Challenger 2009, at the Atlantida Beach in the Paphos suburb of Geroskipou, on Sunday evening.Seixas/Neide took a quick lead in the score and showed their class, completely dominating their opponents for the remainder of the match, which lasted a mere 35 minutes, in front of 1’000 spectators. The Brazilians earn € 1,900 in prize money, with the Estonians pocketed € 1,560.Despite having suffered a setback to the Netherlands early in the tournament, the Brazilians had come through the losers’ bracket unscathed and had defeated Switzerland’s Muriel Graessli/ Tanya Schmocker 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) in the semi-finals earlier in the afternoon.Graumann/Bratuhhina had staged a comeback to squeeze past Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Greta Cicolari 2-1 (16-21, 21-16, 15-10) in the other semi-final of the day.Earlier in the evening, Menegatti/Cicolari had edged Graessli/Schmocker 2-0 (23-21, 21-19) in 53 minutes, to win the bronze medal. The Swiss made an attempt to come back in the second set, taking a brief lead, but the Italians managed to clinch a straight-set victory. The Italians earn € 1,200 for their third place. The Cyprus Challenger, meanwhile, proved to be a major success for the home team. Cyprus, which last year did not even have a team to enter in the competition, has seen the innovative Beach Volleyball Development Programme of the Cyprus Volleyball Federation already bear fruits. Sixteen-year-old Mariota Angelopoulou and 17-year-old Manolina Angelopoulou teamed up to finish in seventh place - the highest distinction ever for a Cyprus team in an FIVB or CEV event. The tournament, hosted at the Atlantida Beach by the Municipality of Geroskipou for the fourth year in a row, involved 23 teams from 16 different countries and Mayor Tassos Kouzoupos promised a double-gender event for the 2010 season in his speech during the Closing Ceremony.
